The First Small Step Back to Myself

In Japan, we take off our shoes before we step into our homes. I never thought much about it.

It was simply part of coming home.

When I come home, I close the door behind me. The sound of cars outside fades away. I take off my shoes, turn them neatly toward the door, and line them up at the entrance. Then I step up into the house. My shoulders drop slightly, and I let out a quiet breath.

I leave my shoes at the entrance, along with the tension and the roles I play outside my home.

I had always thought the small step at the entrance was simply practical—a way to keep dirt from outside from coming into the house.

But then, I realized something.

When I leave home, I step down. When I come home, I step up.

In a Japanese genkan, the floor inside the house is higher than the entrance where we leave our shoes. It is only a small difference in height, something I had crossed countless times without thinking. But that small difference began to feel like a metaphor to me—a reminder to take care of what is inside me, too.

I used to see that small difference in height as just part of the house. Now, every time I step up, it feels like the first small step back to myself.

The entrance itself has not changed. The same door closes behind me. The same shoes wait at the entrance. I cross the same small step every day. What has changed is the way I see it.

Now, when I come home, taking off my shoes feels like more than a simple habit. For a moment, I can leave a little of the outside world behind and return to myself. I step up into my own space, leaving behind what I no longer need to carry inside.

Sometimes, coming home begins with just one small step.
